The purpose of this essay is to find out what the purpose of music videos are.
The first music video was for the song bohemian rhapsody by queen, the purpose of a music video is primarily to make more money, but I have heard some people talk about music videos for their shock factors in the past… for example rudimental’s song waiting all night I’ve heard multiple people speaking about people getting run over by a truck which is featured in this music video, which worked because I then watched the music video in dis-belief. So overall music videos are for money.
The promotion of the artists is done through the music video itself, not only because we see the band playing live music, but also because they might have used their own logo on their drums or t-shirts. On television the name of the song is displayed on the bottom of the screen somewhere showing the artists name the album name and the song name, occasionally the record label will have put their name on their also, pushing their name, (drive thru records etc.) in some of the bigger names (lady gaga) she has had the producers name also put on the video, the bigger the producer/director the better connections e.g. the “pussy wagon” from kill bill appears in lady Gaga’s music video.
Producers market artists in different ways, for example RAGC, is portrayed in a more softer approach, where as other bands like slayer are portrayed a much more savage image, this is done to attract a much different demographic for different genres of music, this can make you more money in the long run, as you can create a fashion statement or even attract more bands to come and make the same genre of music and include them on your record label.
Because you are not just hearing your favourite bands you are also seeing them, this will throw more money toward the record labels and music tv stations such as ‘scuzz’ and kerrang etc. because every time a song is played the band receives royalties, so if you are also showing music videos and people are seeing them they will get double the amount of royalties.
Bands can make loads of more money by their material be accessed, by the internet by soundcloud, bandcamp, youtube, deezer, spotify, and itunes, and all of these are available through mobile internet, obviously if you had a radio station you can download and play these songs on it. More platforms means more potential revenue for the bands. The problems with all of this are, piracy, everythings easier and cheaper to get these days off the internet, the more stuff there is online on these sites, the more you have to sift through and find what you were looking for. Big names may also be put first.
Synergy is when two or companies make deals to sell more products and make more money. With the market you can pay to get your act involved with another business (Disney) (Hannah Montana) for example Hannah Montana which is now owned by a Disney corporation will contract out their trademark for use with other companies for use with merchandising. For example Hannah Montana birthday cakes and lampshades.
Music videos are massively popular because more and more people want to see their favourite bands ideas behind stuff, etc. not only that but sometimes you get some live footage, which allows you to see your favourite bands footage on stage. Not only this, but youtube has become a hive for upcoming musicians such as rebbeca black and Justin beiber and OK GO!

The Commissioning Process
Commissioning editors identify media products to publish in
order to build up a publisher list they commission work by getting authors book
proposals. Their role is like that of a buyer. They also ensure authors deliver
typescripts to a specification and on time.
Page lock-down is when the script is in the process of being filmed and no more copies or re-writes to be handed in. changes can be made in certain circumstances but the whole script is not to be changed just one page.
The role is like a book/magazine publisher. In magazine
publishing, commissioning editors commission writers to produce articles and
features. In the media industry (making films etc.) they have the final say on
what will and what will not be published. They can also make changes in
production
A producer’s role is to get a larger crew together, in order
to create the finish product
A director’s role in the media industry is to make or
suggest changes to the script; they are more likely to get their own way rather
than the writers.
The script editors’ job role in all of this, their job is to
suggest and make small changes to the script.
The agent is someone who will find work for other writers,
and actors. They typically get ten per cent of their contracts wage.
A writer will be writing the script for the show, play,
book, magazine etc.
A corporation is somebody who I can get work from, or even
submit work to hopefully get some work.
Independent production companies are somewhat smaller than
other bigger companies such as the BBC; friendships can blossom from work
that’s as close as the independent production companies. They typically have to
hire more people from either freelance areas or bigger companies, costing them
more money.
Independent directors or producers tend to just do the same
jobs as normal directors and producers but on their own… they might multi task
Organisations We love the craft and creativity of great
scripts and consider it a true honour to work with writers to help hone their
vision and bring the characters and conflicts they have imagined to the
screen. (http://www.scriptfactory.co.uk/about/)
Competitions the winner will receive a six-month mentoring
and development package with Hayley McKenzie from Script Angel. The package
includes feedback on one project from outline to polished script. Plus
development to treatment stage on a further three projects over the same
six-month period. The mentoring period begins during the London Screenwriters
Festival. Mentoring can take place over Skype should you live too far away from
Script Angel / London. (http://www.londonscreenwritersfestival.com/london-screenwriters-six-month-mentoring-competition/#sthash.sp3LbmT8.dpuf)
not only this but in the hope to be recognised and make it big in the media
industry
Pre-production planning writers may have to make amendments
to their script, and liaise with the story board artists, and be present for
the re-writing of the scripts.
Script editing writers at this point can only suggest
changes to their script; they are not likely to get what they want at this
point. More writers may have to be hired if changes are to be made,
Director or producer involvement this is primarily will just
be if they want changes to be made and if they want any more writers involved.
Shooting script production this is when you start to film
the script productionPage lock-down is when the script is in the process of being filmed and no more copies or re-writes to be handed in. changes can be made in certain circumstances but the whole script is not to be changed just one page.
Adjustment during shooting stage
Once this stage occurs, there will be no more rewrites or
edits, the script will be published and handed to the department. If any scenes
do need to be rewritten and changed, locking the pages allows this to be easily
tracked, so it keeps the revised and unrevised pages separate which will show
the difference between the original script and the changes.
As a writer you have to manage your time wisely. Hours are
not fixed and you may go several days, weeks, or months without writing
anything. However, they may then go without sleep in order to meet tight dead
lines. Most writers are freelance there fore their hours are really variable
·
Copy wright/plagiarism – this is when somebody
copies you, copywright is put in place to stop this. Writers can be taken to
court if they are found to be plagiarising
·
Censorship – this is when you would be careful
about the content of which you are producing, for the T.V., the watershed is
put in place after 9pm meaning no offensive material will be shown before 9.
·
Liable – screen writers have to be very careful
of publishing lies incase they then become liable to be sued.

I have
chosen this script for the sole purpose of the single male detective, this is

I have chose
this script because of the inner city setting, mine will be set inside an inner
city area, obviously not London, but Norwich.

Single Camera Techniques
In
this essay, I will be writing about Single Camera Techniques. I will
be looking at how different components such as lighting, correctly
dubbed sound, and multiple angles affect shots when using just a
single camera and how it is different from using multiple cameras. I
am writing this essay to get a greater understanding of what the
advantages and disadvantages are of using a single camera when making
a production, and if it is better to use a single camera rather than
more than just one!
When making a single camera production, you can only use one camera (obviously), it consists of using just one camera. It is used to make the viewers of the production feel a part of the production, and it makes it more realistic. At the cost of it looking more realistic we also have a lot of time being spent recording and editing. Sometimes producers may have to add another camera to the set if a particular scene has a lot of speech or if there is a lot of action in this particular scene. This is because the scene would be jumpy, jumping from one characters face to another, rather than just keeping two cameras still, So by inserting another camera it gives the shot more of a smooth feel.
In a single camera production, each shot is lit singularly so its easier than using multiple camera's as every scene in a multi camera production has to have the same or nearly the same lighting balance. Because every scene in the production is lit individually, the director can use the light for his own use. The shots are usually lit by placing the subject in the middle of all the camers and lights The camera will be placed at the desired angle(s). with the main lights placed on the subject and the reflector in line of the lights There should be a dark background behind the actor.
dialogue in single camera productions has many advantages but also just as many disadvantages, The disadvantages are if you use just the built in voice recorder in a single camera, you will usually pick up background noise and make the scenes sound of low quality and other demeaning qualities. It also has disadvantages against multi camera productions as it is easier to pick up anyone that is in the scene you are recording as a lot of multi camera formats have the microphones visible when scenes are being shot.
The editing stage of productions is always quite a long and dragged out period, this is because of the fact you have to order each shot you have captured and decide whether any scenes need re-shooting. In single camera productions it is renound that all scenes will be filmed together and when the specific characters and cast are needed. When using multiple cameras it is plausible to edit whilst still filming. So with programmes such as the news, they can cut to other reporters whenever they want to. This isn't possible using the single camera technique, so this means when each scene is filmed it has to be taken to a studio, as this is one of the only places where editing can happen.
making a story is essential when thinking of making a new programme (or series). It means thinking up an idea which really interests you or people in your demographic. And then getting all the cruicial resources such as the right characters, choosing the right locations, the style you want to show it in and the structure the production will eventually take off (hopefully).
When building a scene, there are some things you have to take into consideration. people, place, plot, and point. People are obviously needed because you have to know who is in the particular scenes you are filming. The place is important because you need to know the location you're filming at and if it is suitable for the scene you are shooting. Plot is also important. As a director you have to be up to date with what parts of the plot are in which scenes. The last but not least is point its important as point is if the scene keeps with tone of the story (or drama).
There are various genres linked with single camera productions, these include period dramas, crime, horror, soaps Period dramas are programmes which have been set in the past, the likes of Downton Abbey, and more recently Mr Selfridge are examples of period dramas. Drama documentaries uses "the language of drama" to create interest around certain documented content. They are not very accurate. Programmes such as “the house of saddam” and “space race” are dramadocs. Crime dramas are centered around criminals and authorative figures such as the police. Examples of this genre include Bored to death, Poirot, and midsommer murders.
The single camera technique is also used in series, serial and single dramas. Shows like law and order and NCSI are examples. Each series will have a main narrative which will create a storyline. This will run through some episodes or maybe even the whole series. Hollyoaks and Waterloo Road are popular examples of serial dramas. They do not have start and end date, they are continuous so will therefore run for Indefinite periods of time.

Script Proposal and Synopsis
What is the title of your proposed script?
at this moment in time i have no idea of what i would like to call my script
I would like to have my script and show in the style of "bored to death" obviously this would be pretty hard as the humor and style is going to be hard to remake this on a smaller level,
I plan on having my script made into a series, I feel this would be best.
well in the real world the intention of my product would be to make money, being as i am in college i would only be doing this for my BTEC media diploma.
but i hope to make people want to laugh more from my narrative
No my production is not high concept (as in its an idea thats been used in a lot of T.V. programmes) but at the moment i am in a type of "conceptual" stage.
I hope to display my characters as reserved intelligent individuals living on their own in a built up area (preferably a big city e.g. Norwich or London along the lines of that anyway)
my intended audience is the higher end of the teenage bracket. 18-20's
my main characters I hope are all male, (3 main characters) two being friends from highschool, and one being their boss at work. I don't know what to call them all yet, but I do know I want the two friends to be 20-30 and the Boss to be 50-55 an older male with grey hair but still as childish as the other two, and being brought up from a wealthier background than the other two characters.
Ted Danson (boss - Ted Danson) WHY?
Jason Schwartzman (protagonist - Vaughn Ames) WHY? WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT THEM?
Zac Galifinakis (friend - Ray Hansen
These three actors have all inspired me to make this script, they all play in an existing T.V. show called Bored To Death, I hope to base my script on this by making a similar style script.
There are some requirements for the actors, this only being the ages they are e.g. The Boss being an older age than the other two other than that there are no requirements.
Synopsis
In a prison cell in Norwich, after the main character (Jason) being arrested for moonlighting as a private detective and breaking up a botched up kidnapping, his boss eventually bails him out and then asks him what happened we then dive into a story about how he got arrested.
We start his story in his apartment arguing with his girlfriend who then proceeds to leave him. after his constant drinking of wine, smoking of marijuana, and his lax attitude. after this he decides he should try to sort his life out and stop drinking and smoking, with little help from his friends he needs another way to keep his mind off of his relationship issues, he then makes an advert on a webpage for a private detective despite his lack of common sense and a legal investigator licsence.
after a few hours our protagonist recieves a bundle of messeges asking for help, he imediatley contacts one of the numbers shown on the monitor of his computer, after a phone call we learn that a young woman is afriad that her boyfriend that she lives with has been missing for 5 days, she promtly gives Vaughn a picture of her boyfriend and his name "Marcellus Brown"
we then see our protagonist walking down a wet St Benedicts Street In Norwich to a small café called 'The Bicycle Shop' where he is to meet his client, we see Mr. Ames and a young lady across the table Mr Ames stits down at, she introduces herself as Synthia a sad and worried young girlfriend, she tells Vaughn of a small hotel that he has supposedly holed himself up in, cut too a scene of Vaughn standing underneath a street light in a little allyway leading to a bin compound smoking a cigarette and slightly frowning, he then throws his cigarette onto the road infront of him and confidently strides into the hotel and asks if he has any one signed in under the name "Marcellus" the clerck at this tiny hotel in one of the neon filled nooks of Norwich gives Vaughn a dirty look and sighs "can't do mate, sorry"
Write a 300 word synopsis detailing the beginning, middle and end of you proposed narrative. Focus mainly on the central narrative but do also mention any other strands if necessary.
